What is a Commuter Pass?

If you’re planning to stay in Japan for a long time whether for work or study, it would be very useful for you to learn about the teiki or commuter pass. The teiki definitely makes it more convenient and cheaper to travel to and from from work or school.

Compared to the usual IC pass fares, the teiki allows you a discount since you’re technically buying your transportation fare wholesale. You may buy a teiki that you can use and renew every month, every three, or six months.

Purchase of the teiki may be done at the ticket counter or at ticket machines at the station gates. If you’re purchasing at the ticket counter, you will need to fill out a form with your full name, sex, address and phone number and give it to the station attendant.

If you’re purchasing from the ticket machine, press the “Commuter Pass option,” and fill in the necessary details. Your details will then be printed on the card with the date of validity.

You may use your teiki freely within the route you specified upon purchase. If you do get on trains that aren’t specified in the teiki, don’t worry, since the fares will self-adjust and you will only have to pay for the fares not included in our ticket.

Additionally, in case you lose your teiki, you may report it lost to station attendants, and if not found, you may transfer your remaining credits to a new card. This process will incur a small fee but very useful especially if you have a lot of balance left on your card.
