2021.09.10Takoyaki Ice Cream?

Who doesn’t love takoyaki?

Takoyaki (たこ焼き or 蛸焼) or “octopus balls” is a ball-shaped Japanese snack made of a wheat flour-based batter and cooked in a special molded pan. It is typically filled with minced or diced octopus (tako), tempura scraps (tenkasu), pickled ginger (beni shoga), and green onion (negi). The balls are brushed with takoyaki sauce (similar to Worcestershire sauce) and mayonnaise, and then sprinkled with green laver (aonori) and shavings of dried bonito (katsuobushi).

Yaki comes from yaku (焼く), which is one of the cooking methods in Japanese cuisine, meaning ‘to fry or grill’, and can be found in the names of other dishes in Japanese cuisine such as okonomiyaki and ikayaki (other famous Osakan dishes).

Sounds good right?

But what about takoyaki ice cream? 😕

Recently, these weird flavored ice cream has been popping up on convenience stores. But what does it taste like?

So….

They looked exactly like octopus balls without octopus inside, with dark brown takoyaki sauce and topping of pinky smoked bonito flakes and green laver. But those are not the real deal.  They are just strawberry-flavored granules, matcha-flavored granules, chocolate ice cream and…vanilla ice cream with dashi soy sauce.

What do you think?

Yay or nay?
